This is my EAR834p clone build. I followed Skunkies build guide on Youtube which was great! I did however implement the Thorsten and Roberts mods from the LencoHeaven forum and followed their grounding scheme. I also have a MM/MC switch on the back where the MC goes trough a pair of Lundahl LL1931 step ups transformers.
This build do however have quite a loud hum that I have not been able to get rid of.
What turntable are you using? The reason I ask is you seem to be having a major issue other folks using this board aren't having. I know with my older technics SL-B2 it SCREAMS hum with the ground wire disconected and there is a tiny bit of hum with it connected. With my new SL-100C I don't even need to connect the ground wire (might be this new TT has a 3 wire grounded plug?) and it's totally silent.
A friend has just purchased a completely built version of the EAR834, a twin box version where the power supply is in a separate aluminium case. Very nice it was too, with a genuine Alps Blue potentiometer. It had the torroidal transformer. I've just finished upgrading the usual caps. Absolute NO HUM and sounds stunning! Result!
Beatiful wooden case! What do you consider loud or at least intrusive hum? At a rather loud volume level (around 87dB at the listening position) the hum is 53dB, which is inaudible. Only detectable with my ear to the speaker.
Well, tried the new transformer today. It's better but still not quiet. I hear hum on louder volume levels if within 1,5 meters from speakers in a quiet room. Not sure if I'm going to get it any better than this. It's good enough even though it bugs me that I can't get it silent. It's a 100hz hum. I even glued thin mumetal on all walls surrounding main board and SUTs.
I'm wondering if the wooden box might be an issue resulting in hum. A metal case might be better?
Did you find a resolution to the hum problem? I'm starting down the road to build my own 834. I have the parts in stock ready to go...
I am no expert on ground loops but I will be building the same boards up in the very near future. Have you tried flipping the main board around and really shortening up the signal wire so there are much closer to the rca’s? The LONG grounding (LOOP!) wire coming off that main board looks like it it’s tying into power supply board but could easily just be tied directly across to main star? Easy enough to try quick!
