I wonder how Matt feels about his little preamp getting so much attention as of late? 😂 It really does sound good for what it is and how simple it is to make. And for a first time builder like myself, it went a long way to instill confidence for my next build.

@SpeedyDad A while back I found some panel-mounted LEDs (like the one in the photo above) that runs on 120VAC. Super simple to just wire in with the power switch!

@Skunkie Well with my "unscientific" experimenting (my ear), I noticed it acts a lot like a "loudness" button. It will distort with the bypass caps engaged at higher volumes, but at lower volumes engaging the bypass caps adds some "substance". If you try it out you'll see what I mean.

Before I built the one above in the photos, I had built one prior. But I didn't build the power supply for this one because the amp I'm using it with had the correct voltages so I just took them from it. The amp itself was an old 50's console stereo (the brand escapes me right now) that uses two 6BQ5's and I robbed the amp to use as my shop stereo. I needed to drive it a bit harder so I built this premp. The point of this story is that I actually added the cathode bypass caps but also added a switch to take them out of the circuit, so I can switch them in and out to see how it plays with different tubes. I don't know of that's a common, or even good practice, but you don't know how things will play if you don't try! 😀

I'm curious @shoreman1966, which 12A_7 tube are you using? I find the 12AU7 to have just the right amount of drive for me without overdoing it. My phono pre sounds great in front of it too!

@Skunkie I think it's the same size you used for the headphone amp. Hammond 7" x 5" x 2".
